DES MOINES, Iowa — While Gov. Kim Reynolds celebrated her Christmas at Terrace Hill event with some Iowans, local advocacy groups protested outside of the governor's mansion in support of Palestine.
The demonstrators stood for nearly two hours, saying it is impossible to celebrate Christmas while the war in Gaza continues.
"Their village was being massacred and it continues to this day, the massacring of Palestinians and it's not okay," said demonstrator Elizabeth Leas.
Those rallying called for a ceasefire and claimed that Reynolds has signed unconstitutional laws that favor Israel.
"I think we should expect our politicians to serve us and not a dictatorship across the world. But, you know, in order for that to happen, we have to apply pressure," said Robert Packnett, one of the demonstrators.
Ultimately, those in attendance say they are tired of being silenced, and of criticism towards Palestinians.
"I love this country, it's one of the best places to live," Leas said. "And I want to challenge the governor, and the people of Iowa and the whole entire country to be better and do better. We should not be exploiting war, we should be bringing peace."
Reynolds provided Local 5 with the following statement:
“While today’s protest in support of Hamas terrorists was sad and disgraceful, people of faith in Iowa will not be deterred in our joyous celebration of the birth of our Lord and support for Israel. I want to thank the Department of Public Safety for managing the situation and ensuring the safety of our guests.”
Throughout the rally, demonstrators continued to emphasize the Palestinians who have been killed, calling on Reynolds to stop support to Israel.
"You know I think she should be more worried about her constituents, the people of Iowa, rather than trying to appease a foreign government," Packnett said.
The event on Terrace Hill was open for Iowans to come participate in Christmas festivities - starting at $25 a ticket, or $50 per household.
First lady of Florida Casey DeSantis and Iowa Rep. Zach Nunn were both in attendance with their families.
