DCI investigating after Waterloo police officer shot armed man, killing him

Police say 41-year-old John Piazza of Waterloo was pointing a long gun at officers from inside his house on Monday.

DES MOINES, Iowa — The Iowa Division of Criminal Investigation is looking into the shooting death of an armed 41-year-old, the Iowa Department of Public Safety shared on Tuesday.

Police responded to a house on Hartman Avenue in Waterloo around 3 p.m. on Monday, March 25, after getting reports of a man threatening employees at nearby Victory Motors.

Employees told police that, around 2:45 p.m., a man identified as 41-year-old John Piazza pointed a gun at an employee's face and fired at the property, promising to come back later with a rifle.

Police went to Piazza's home just behind the car dealership and saw him pointing a long gun at officers through the windows.

An officer then shot and killed Piazza.

The officer has been placed on critical incident leave as the Iowa DCI continues to investigate.
