The man accused of robbing the Taylor Ridge, Illinois Post Office is facing a charge of being a felon in possession of firearms.
A statement from the Department of Justice says that 40-year-old Walker Hampton robbed two employees at the post office in January of 2015, brandishing a handgun in the process.
Furthering the offense, on February 25, Hampton allegedly possessed stolen firearms and was a felon in possession of firearms, according to the statement.
Previous reports indicate that Hampton also was facing a charge of attempted escape after scraping mortar away from the glass blocks of a window in his cell at the Mercer County Jail.
If Hampton is found guilty, he faces a minimum sentence of seven years in prison and a possible maximum sentence of life in prison as well as up to a $1 million fine.
Hampton was arrested February 25 in Mercer County and was set to be transferred to federal custody to be arraigned in U.S. District Court in Rock Island. Hampton was ordered to remain in custody of the U.S. Marshals Service.
