The department has forwarded the results of its ongoing investigation to the Whiteside County States Attorney office for review and possible criminal charges.

STERLING, Illinois -- Bullying on social networks has landed several Sterling High School students in trouble with police and school officials.

According to Sterling Police, several students were discovered using social media to make threats toward other students. When school officials were made aware of the threats, they turned the matter over to the police department, which investigated and determined the threats were legitimate.

The department has forwarded the results of its ongoing investigation to the Whiteside County States Attorney office for review and possible criminal charges.

Police stress that there is no reason to believe that any students were in imminent danger.

Sterling Public Schools Superintendent Tad Everett assured police that they will "enact their student discipline policy to address these students through appropriate disciplinary action."
