ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Rock Island Police say that a Monday afternoon altercation escalated into shots being fired in the city's west end.

According to a news release, police responded to the 1500 block of 5th Street to a report of gunshots around 2 p.m. Arriving officers found evidence of shots being fired but did not find victims or damaged property.

Police say that surveillance video revealed two groups of people involved in an argument before shots were fired between them. The video showed them running away from the area afterward.

Witnesses helped police identify a possible suspect's vehicle leaving the scene. Police stopped the vehicle and detained multiple occupants.

Police arrested one of the occupants, 19-year-old Anthony Hereford-Warren, who police say had a loaded handgun and about one pound of cannabis. Hereford-Warren has been charged with armed violence.

The incident remains under investigation by the Rock Island Police Department’s Criminal Investigation Division.
