Police capture Iowa man wanted for attempted murder

Northwest of the Quad Cities, police were searching for a man they say is wanted for attempted murder involving a peace officer.

Less than 24 hours after the search began, police captured a man wanted for attempted murder in Oelwein, Iowa.

Abel Quijas Jr, 33, of Maynard, Iowa, was charged with one count of attempted murder involving a peace officer as of Thursday afternoon, September 11, 2014.

Quijas was last seen on foot northeast of Oelwein.  Schools in Oelwein were locked down as a precaution that day.

The Oelwein Community Schools website included a post indicating the lockdown was lifted and classes would be held as usual Friday, September 12, 2014.

“School will be running the normal schedule today.  The lock down has ended.  Law enforcement report the individual is still at large, but there is no reason to believe the public is in danger,” the post said.

Quijas was captured Friday, September 12 according to a statement from the Iowa Department of Public Safety.  State Police did not immediately release details of where or how he was captured. He was then hospitalized for injuries he received in the incident, according to a statement from the Iowa Department of Public Safety.  His injuries were not life-threading.

“At this time, the Oelwein Police Department has no information to believe the public is in any danger,” said an earilier statement from Oelwein Police.
