Claude Hanson, 62, died less than a week after he was found stabbed July 15, 2015 at Colonial Court Apartments in the 3800 block of Bridge Avenue in Davenport, Iowa.

Two months after his death, the case remained unsolved.  Now, police say they think they know who did it.

Investigators said DNA samples taken from the murder scene led them to 54-year-old Robert Earl Carter.  They believe Carter went to Hanson’s apartment and waited for him to return.

“When Hanson arrived, Carter attacked him and stabbed him.  He took money from the victim’s wallet and fled,” said a statement from the Davenport Police Department.

The match between the crime scene samples and Carter’s DNA was confirmed November 24, the statement said.

Carter was already in the Scott County Jail, since October 19, after he was charged with failing to appear on unrelated burglary and intoxication charges.  Carter was charged November 25 with murder and with burglary; he remained held in the Scott County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bond.
