COLLINSVILLE, Ill — Police said a man was shot to death while attempting to enter a home in Collinsville Tuesday night.
Just after 6 p.m., police responded to the 500 block of St. Louis Road. When Collinsville Police Department officers arrived they saw a man lying wounded on the porch. Officers gave the man aid until Collinsville Fire Department EMS took over.
The man, identified Wednesday as 31-year-old Jonathan J. Gagen, was pronounced dead at the scene.
According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, an initial investigation revealed Gagen was on the front porch of the home and refused to leave despite requests from the homeowner. The homeowner feared for his safety and retrieved a firearm from inside the home while making "numerous" requests for Gagen to leave.
The homeowner told Gagen not to enter the home, and when he opened the storm door, he said the homeowner would have to shoot him, according to the sheriff's office. That's when the homeowner fired one shot, which struck Gagen in the chest.
Another resident at the home called 911 and requested police assistance immediately afterward.
According to the Madison County Sheriff's Office, all residents at the home were cooperating with the investigation.
The Madison County Sheriff's Office took over the investigation because a family member of the homeowner is a part-time Collinsville police employee.
According to the Madison County Prosecuting Attorney's Office, 5 On Your Side learned there are two cases in Madison County involving Gagen with aggravated battery charges.
One charge accuses Gagen of grabbing a Granite City Police Officer's face and scratching his eyeball in 2020. Another charge said Gagen was fighting with a private security officer at Oliver C. Anderson Hospital, causing the officer to fall and break his leg and ankle in June 2023.
Both cases were still pending as of Wednesday. There have been various pleadings and orders in both cases.
There was a bond condition in Sep. 2023, where Gagen had to complete a screening for mental health court.
According to documents, in Feb. 2024, the Madison County Problem Solving Courts Motion for Assessment filed is order closed because the defendant was found to be beyond the scope of the program.
The Feb. document shared, Gagen also lived on St. Louis Road, which is a minute car ride or a nine minute walk from the home on the 500 block of St. Louis road.
