Suspect arrested following fatal shooting at Rock Island apartment complex

A 21-year-old man is dead after a shooting at a Rock Island apartment complex Saturday afternoon. A suspect has been arrested.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Update: At 9 a.m. on Monday, May 13, the Rock Island County Coroner identified the victim in this shooting as 21-year-old Omari Braxton of Rock Island.

A suspect has been arrested after a 21-year-old man was killed in a shooting at a Rock Island apartment complex Saturday afternoon.

Just before 4:43 p.m., Rock Island police responded to a reported gunshot victim inside the Maple Ridge Apartment complex in the 3700 block of 5th Street.

According to a news release, officers found 21-year-old Omari Braxton of Rock Island in the parking lot with life-threatening gunshot wounds. He was transported to a local hospital, where he later died.

On Saturday evening, Rock Island police obtained an arrest warrant for 29-year-old Derrick B. Nephew Jr. for first degree murder. Nephew was arrested in Davenport around 2:40 a.m. Sunday morning. He was transported to the Scott County Jail, awaiting extradition to Illinois. The incident is under investigation.
