Man dead after shooting at Mt. Pleasant police and crashing vehicle

Mt. Pleasant police say a man is dead after he shot several rounds at a police officer and led authorities on a high-speed chase on Thursday, Sept. 5.

MT PLEASANT, Iowa — Mt. Pleasant police say a man is dead after he shot several rounds at a police officer and led authorities on a high-speed chase on Thursday, Sept. 5.

According to a Facebook post, Mt. Pleasant police responded to a domestic violence call around 6:30 p.m. Officials saw the suspect driving by the scene and attempted to make contact with him, but the suspect fled. 

Near the corner of W. Henry Street and N. Jefferson Street, police say the man shot several times at a Mt. Pleasant police officer who was inside of his patrol vehicle. A photo posted by the police department shows the vehicle's windshield with a bullet hole directly in front of the driver's seat.

The suspect then fled before losing control of his vehicle near the intersection of Highway 218 and 185th Street. 

Officials say police then approached the vehicle and found that the suspect was dead. The man's name is being withheld pending notification of family. 

No officers fired their weapons during the incident, according to the post. The officer who was shot at was treated and released with no injuries. 

The investigation is ongoing with the support of the Iowa Department of Criminal Investigations.
