Police: Kewanee man charged with animal cruelty after he choked, threw 8-week-old puppy

A Kewanee man is facing multiple charges, including animal cruelty, after police responded to an incident at the Lakeland Terrace apartment complex on Monday.

KEWANEE, Ill. — A Kewanee man is facing multiple charges, including animal cruelty, after police responded to an incident at the Lakeland Terrace apartment complex on Monday, Nov. 11.

According to a Kewanee Police Department news release, officials responded to the complex and met a complainant who provided video evidence showing 26-year-old resident Brandon Adams assaulting a person and an eight-week-old puppy. 

Officials said the video showed Adams grabbing the puppy by the throat, appearing to choke it and handling it by its legs before dropping it onto the floor. Adams also allegedly picked the puppy up by its head or neck and threw it onto a couch. 

Officials said additional video evidence showed Adams assaulting a woman earlier in the day. Adams was arrested and charged with the following crimes:

  • Animal cruelty (class A misdemeanor)
  • Domestic battery (class A misdemeanor)
  • Possession of methamphetamine (class 3 felony)
