Trial for Sherrard women charged with animal abuse to move forward in Mercer County

A preliminary hearing for Karen Plambeck, who was found with nearly 200 dogs in poor condition in August, determined there was enough evidence to bring her to trial.

ALEDO, Ill. — Karen Plambeck, who was charged with several counts of animal cruelty, appeared in front of a Mercer County judge for a preliminary hearing on Tuesday, Oct. 18, to see if there was probable cause for further trial.

Plambeck was arrested in August and charged with five felony counts of aggravated cruelty to animals after nearly 200 dogs were recovered from her property in poor condition. Plambeck pled not guilty to these charges

Plambeck was also taken into custody for the same charges in 2019 in connection with horses that were found on her property in poor condition.

During the preliminary hearing, Plambeck waived her right to have the charges read to her.

The Mercer County judge decided there was enough evidence and probable cause to move forward with her trial.

Plambeck did not issue a statement to the press as she was leaving the courthouse.

A pre-trial conference is scheduled for Dec. 12.
