Iowa DPS identifies parents from 1996 infant death investigation

The mystery surrounding a dead baby discovered in a Cedar County, Iowa, barn in 1996 is being revisited after DNA testing identified the baby's parents.

CEDAR COUNTY, Iowa — The mystery surrounding a dead baby discovered in a Cedar County, Iowa, barn in 1996 is being revisited after DNA testing has identified the baby's parents.

According to a press release from the Iowa Department of Public Safety, the parents were about 15 years of age at the time the baby was discovered.

On Nov. 10, 1996, the Cedar County Sheriff's Office received a call about a newborn female who had been found inside a garbage can of a barn at 14 Highway 30 near Lisbon. A search for information related to the newborn, her parents and the circumstances of her death did not reveal any information.

Shortly after discovering the deceased newborn, authorities named her "Baby Jane Lincoln," a result of Highway 30 being previously coined Old Lincoln Highway.

An autopsy determined that Baby Jane's cause of death was "probable exposure."

Baby Jane's death remains under investigation and anybody with information related to the case is encouraged to contact the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office at (563)-886-2121.
