Fire cadet arrested for writing arson 'hit list', Fremont County court documents allege

Court documents claim 18-year-old Kaelyn Surrel's "hit list" included fellow students, school district employees and other "people she had bad encounters with".

FREMONT COUNTY, Iowa — A Shenandoah Fire Department fire cadet is facing multiple felony charges after allegedly making a "hit list" of potential arson victims.

Fremont County court documents claim 18-year-old Kaelyn Surrel had a hit list that included fellow Sidney Community School District students, district employees and other "people she had bad encounters with".

Surrel faces seven felony counts of terroristic threat, which is a Class D felony in Iowa.

She allegedly told the reporting party about the list over the phone as well as over Snapchat messages.

Her position as a fire cadet gave her "potential knowledge to carry out the act", according to court documents.
