TIPTON, Iowa (AP) — Authorities say Cedar County’s former jail administrator has been charged with theft.
The Iowa Department of Public Safety says 49-year-old Daron Wilkinson misappropriated jail funds for his own use. A phone listing for Wilkinson couldn’t be found. Online court records don’t list the name of an attorney who could comment for Wilkinson.
The charge follows release of a state audit report last week that said the Cedar County Sheriff’s Office did not properly deposit money from inmate room and board and work release fees for 2½ years. The loss to the county is estimated at more than $35,000.
The auditors report recommended changes to the Cedar County Sheriff’s office internal controls, such as improving segregation of duties and performing bank reconciliations. The report also recommended reconciling room and board billings to collections and subsequent deposits and reconciling collections for commissary to deposits.
The audit said Wilkinson worked as the jail administrator from May 2013 until his resignation in December 2015.
