Galesburg woman arrested after fatal hit-and-run on Fourth of July

Around 11 p.m., Galesburg police officers were leaving the Lake Storey area after the town's firework show when they found a man lying in the road unresponsive.

GALESBURG, Ill. — A Galesburg woman has been arrested after allegedly hitting a bicyclist and fleeing the scene on the Fourth of July, officials say.

Around 11 p.m. on Thursday, July 4, officers with the Galesburg Police Department were leaving the Lake Storey area after the town's main fireworks event. That's when they found a man lying unresponsive in the road at the 3500 block of N. Henderson Street, according to a press release about the incident.

Medical personnel were called to the scene and began to administer life-saving measures. The man, who has been identified as 46-year-old Eric McKinney, was transported to a local hospital where he was later pronounced deceased at 12:16 a.m.

An investigation determined McKinney had been riding his bicycle when he was hit. The driver, who officials have identified as 65-year-old Martha E. Ray, allegedly fled the scene southbound. Ray was arrested and charged with leaving the scene of a fatality crash. She is being held at the Knox County Jail pending a court appearance.

Officials say further charges are pending and that the incident remains under investigation.
