Chhabria Harris gets 20 years in plea deal for I-74 pedestrian bridge crash that killed 2

Harris will have to serve 85% of her sentence before being eligible for release.

ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Editor's note: The video above aired on Oct. 25, when a petition asking for Harris to be released from jail was denied by a court.

More than a year after Chhabria Harris drove onto the I-74 pedestrian bridge and hit three men, killing two of them, the Quad Cities woman learned her fate.

On Wednesday, Nov. 8, Harris signed a plea deal in Rock Island County, pleading guilty to one count of aggravated DUI in exchange for a sentence of 20 years in prison, with two years of parole following her release. Under Illinois law, she must serve at least 85% of her sentence — 17 years — before being eligible for release.

The complaint was amended to read that Harris pled guilty to aggravated DUI "that resulted in the deaths of Ethan Gonzalez and Anthony Castaneda."

Harris also receives credit for time served in prison, which she has been held in custody since the incident in May 2022.

Back on May 22, Harris drove onto the newly opened I-74 path and struck three pedestrians at about 2 a.m. The crash resulted in the deaths of 21-year-old Ethan L. Gonzalez and 18-year-old Anthony M. Castaneda, both of Moline.
