BETTENDORF, Iowa — A Bettendorf man has been sentenced to 12 years in federal prison for receiving/distributing child pornography and gun charges, according to a press release.
Public court documents and evidence presented at the sentencing showed Jakob Paul Newberry, 29, had shared files containing child sexual abuse material from an iCloud account and uploaded additional child sexual abuse material using a Kik account. The Scott County Sheriff's Office received a CyberTip from the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children on the incidents. During the investigation, officers also found that Newberry had been using Instagram to obtain nude photographs of minor females and attempted to extort the minors into sending other sexual images.

The press release says officers also found out that Newberry was possessing firearms as an unlawful drug user.
After finishing his sentence, Newberry will be required to serve five years of supervised release. United States Attorney Richard D. Westphal of the Southern District of Iowa made the sentencing announcement. The case was investigated by the Scott County Sheriff’s Office.
The case was brought as part of Project Safe Childhood, a nationwide initiative to combat the growing epidemic of child sexual exploitation and abuse. It was launched in May 2006 by the Department of Justice. According to the release, the goal is to better locate, apprehend and prosecute individuals who exploit children via the Internet, as well as to identify and rescue victims.
