DES MOINES, Iowa — A man is charged with livestock neglect after the Animal Rescue League of Iowa rescued a malnourished horse in late June.
ARL Animal Services officers responded to a call about a horse pulling a carriage in downtown Des Moines on June 22.
When they arrived, officers found a Percheron horse attached to a carriage and appearing malnourished and uncomfortable. The horse, Bruce, had sores and wounds across his body, and his ribs were clearly visible, officers said.
Later, an equine veterinarian found that Bruce was at least 500 lbs. underweight for his breed. Bruce was also assigned a 2.4 out of nine score on the Henneke Body Condition Scale, indicating he was "emaciated," according to a criminal complaint.
A judge ruled on July 12 that Bruce will not be returned to his owner, Ramsey Zimmerman, who is charged with livestock neglect.
Bruce is currently recovering at the ARL's Second Chance Ranch in Des Moines. He has gained about 100 lbs. under the ARL's care, but the animal shelter says it will be months until he is completely healthy.
“No horse should have to suffer like this, much less be forced to work while in such terrible condition,” said ARL CEO Tom Colvin in a statement. “Despite all he has been through, Bruce has only been kind and gentle. We’re happy with his progress so far, but he has a very long road ahead. He didn’t get this way overnight.”
