SANDUSKY, Iowa (AP) — Opponents of a major oil pipeline say roughly 40 people have been arrested during a public demonstration along the project’s route in southeast Iowa.
More than 150 protesters gathered in Sandusky on Saturday, Sept. 17, to try to block the $3.8 billion Dakota Access Pipeline.
The project would stretch 1,172 miles over four states once complete, transporting oil from North Dakota’s Bakken formations to Illinois. It would cross under the Missouri River twice and span across 18 Iowa counties.
Protester Carolyn Scherf of Dubuque, Iowa says she’s concerned the finished pipe could leak or break and contaminate rivers. Scherf says protesters successfully stopped work on the pipeline on Saturday.
On Friday, a federal appeals court ordered a halt to construction of another section of the pipeline in North Dakota due to protesting and federal intervention.
