CLINTON, Iowa — YWCA Clinton hosted a groundbreaking ceremony for its newest initiative on Friday. The nonprofit broke ground on a supportive housing building that will be comprised of 24 units.
Clinton, one of Iowa’s smaller cities, has shown a need for affordable housing options.
"Homelessness was identified in Clinton as the number four health need on the needs assessment that they did here," YWCA Clinton Empowerment Center Director Michelle Passchaert said. "It is definitely something that has impacted our community."
The $6.9 million project will create 24 one-bedroom apartments for individuals and families facing chronic homelessness in Clinton and Jackson counties, YWCA Clinton's service area.
The donor-assisted project aims to uplift individuals and families experiencing difficulties related to chronic homelessness and trouble locating comfortable housing. For over 10 years, local leaders have discussed the best solutions to alleviate these complications.
Staff offices for YWCA Clinton's Empowerment Center will be on-site, along with a community space, meeting space, showers and laundry.
“This project is about building a brighter future for community members who need support, stability, and a safe place to call home,” Shannon Sander-Welzien, executive director of YWCA Clinton, said in a press release.
A commemorative groundbreaking ceremony took place at 399 6th Ave. S in downtown Clinton. For more information on the YWCA Clinton Supportive Housing Initiative, visit its website here.
