MUSCATINE, Iowa — The Muscatine Center for Social Action (MCSA) shelter is receiving an early holiday blessing.

Volunteers from UnityPoint Health - Trinity Muscatine and United Way of Muscatine joined forces to create care kits for women at the MCSA shelter.

“As healthcare providers, we understand how disruptive violence can be for a family’s physical and mental health. Providing these basi necessities helps them start off right and sets them up for healing and moving forward without additional barriers,” Rachel Pohl, the executive director of UnityPoint Health - Trinity Muscatine said.

Items in the kit include basic necessities like toothpaste and toothbrushes, shampoo and conditioner, and other miscellaneous hygiene items.

“We are incredibly grateful to UnityPoint Health Trinity – Muscatine for their ongoing support of the Muscatine community. Their efforts through this kit packing event will help individuals entering the domestic violence shelter to have their most basic needs met, including the need to feel encouraged and supported,” Hilary Henke, the community engagement manager from United Way of Muscatine, said.

The MCSA is one of 28 remaining domestic violence shelters remaining in the state of Iowa. In 2022, the shelter reported housing 22 women and 16 children and nearly 350 calls to their crisis line.

If a spouse or loved one is going through a domestic violence situation, they are encouraged to call the MCSA's emergency hotline at (563)263-8080.
