MOLINE, Ill. — Mercado on Fifth's newly renovated home on 12th Street in Moline is now decorated with three brightly-colored murals honoring the organization and the community it serves.
The nonprofit, which supports minority businesses and highlights the vibrant Latino community of the Quad Cities, unveiled the three murals in a ceremony at on Thursday, Nov. 10.
“We hope this mural inspires Hispanic cultural pride to the thousands of Latinos that call the Quad Cities home,” Mercado President Maria Ontiveros said. “The artwork is a gift to honor the community that has made Mercado on Fifth such a vibrant place to start the weekend.”
The 2,500-square-foot murals, which depict a ballet Folklorico dancer in a colorful outfit, a field of marigold flowers, and a Day of the Dead-inspired portrait, were created in partnership with Chicago-based contemporary artist Czr Prz (Caesar Perez) over a period of four weeks.
The images also pay homage to Mercado's history and its founder, Bob Ontiveros.
“We put a lot of trust into Czr to cover 3 sides of the building, and he did not let us down,” Ontiveros added. “The details are stunning.”
