DAVENPORT, Iowa — May is Mental Health Awareness Month and Narratives QC is opening up the floor for local young adults to share their stories through spoken word and/or poetry.
The inaugural Creative Arts Showcase will feature spoken word and poetry by participants in Narratives QC's programs, which aim to uplift community members between the ages of 17-25. It will take place at Rock Island Library's Watts-Midtown Branch on May 1.
Narratives QC hopes the event will be therapeutic for the performers by showcasing the power of words and storytelling, along with providing an impactful start to Mental Health Awareness Month.
"Sharing our stories is more than a form of expression; it's a way to change the narrative surrounding young adulthood,” Dr. Annette Clevenger, founder of Narratives QC, said in a press release. “We know that 75% of lifelong mental illness starts during these critical years. By giving voice to their experiences, our participants not only find creative outlets to heal themselves but also challenge and enrich our community’s understanding of the perspectives and contributions of today’s young adults.”
Doors to the event will open at 6 p.m. Seating is limited to 137. The event is completely free to the public thanks to a grant from the Quad City Arts.
