Jury in Roy Patterson attempted murder case return court with 'not guilty' decision

After months in court, Roy Patterson III of Oakville, Iowa, has been found innocent of three felony charges.

OAKVILLE, Iowa — Editor's Note: This case originally aired on News 8 in late March. The case regarding Roy Patterson III has since been closed.

After two days of jury deliberation, a Louisa County jury found Roy Patterson III innocent of three felony charges, including attempted murder, first-degree burglary and going armed with intent.

The jury did find Patterson guilty of possession of a dangerous weapon while under the influence.

The initial case surrounded a shots fired call received by Mercer County authorities on March 25. The victim, 49-year-old Jack Leffel, was found at his home with a gunshot wound to the stomach. When Leffel arrived at a nearby hospital, he told police that Roy Patterson III had arrived at his home with a semi-automatic shotgun and an altercation ensued.

Had Patterson III been convicted of all four charges, he would've faced up to 56 years in prison. Patterson III will return to court on Dec. 22 for sentencing on the misdemeanor charge.
