Muscatine Art Center bringing back ornament competition

The competition, which had been stopped during the pandemic, is making its comeback in time for the holidays.

MUSCATINE, Iowa — Editor's Note: This video is a live interview from the Current. This interview discusses the Muscatine Art Center Open House and the deals offered during the event.

The Muscatine Art Center's "Heartfelt & Handmade" Ornament Competition has returned after a three-year hiatus due to the pandemic.

Artists from across the Quad Cities region had an opportunity to donate their best ornaments in any medium of their choosing.

“We are thrilled to bring the Ornament Competition back. It is such a delight to unpack the handmade ornaments crafted by local people. This year, there is a little bit of everything from stained glass and felted wool to LEGO minifigures and fairy gardens,” Melanie Alexander, the director of the Muscatine Art Center, said.

Judges have already gone through and selected the top three ornaments for this year's competition, but voting for the people's choice winner is still open until Dec. 1.

When the Muscatine Art Center hosts its holiday open house on Dec. 7, the general public will be able to purchase any of the ornaments gathered for the competition. All proceeds from the open house, including ticket sales, will go towards educational programming at the Art Center.

Tickets for the open house are currently available to purchase at the Muscatine Art Center for $25 before Dec. 1, or $20 for members of Friends. After Dec. 1, tickets will increase to $35 per ticket, and all tickets include a complimentary glass of wine or beer.
