DAVENPORT, Iowa — A Davenport shooting victim is sleeping a little easier thanks to the community. 33-year-old Arthur Abbey was gifted a new bed recently.
"It took so long for us to get the bed," he said. "We've been looking into this bed for years now."
It will support his spinal cord injury after being paralyzed following a shooting in 2017.
"It changes people's life dramatically," Abbey said. "It changed my life dramatically."
Arthur's family has also been by his side, pushing for a new mattress.
"I prayed about it all the time, and it finally came ... at night I used to cry," Arthur's mother, Anissa Quinn said.
Now they're looking forward to more restful nights. The layout also benefits his other needs, including pneumonia and muscle spasms.
"I think people need to think about their actions before they pick up a gun," Abbey said.
"Arthur's paralyzed and sometimes I feel paralyzed along with him," Quinn said. "I tell anybody, if you need something, don't give up."
Soon, Abbey will be able to control the bed with his voice, like an Alexa.
Several organizations and people donated money for the roughly $40,000 bed. The family is also hoping for a handicap-accessible van.
