MUSCATINE COUNTY, Iowa — On Tuesday, Nov. 28, volunteers searching for a missing man presumed to be the person involved in a single-vehicle accident that occurred on Monday, Nov. 27 found the man's body, according to a Muscatine County Sheriff's Office news release.
22-year-old Samuel Kessel of Letts, Iowa was found deceased around 5:10 p.m. on Tuesday.
It's believed that Kessel was the driver of the single-vehicle crash that occurred on Monday night near the intersection of Independence Avenue and 231st St. in Muscatine County. That night, responding authorities found an unoccupied 2005 GMC Sierra on its roof, in a ditch, north of the aforementioned intersection.
Canine units and drones equipped with thermal imaging were used to attempt to locate the occupant of the vehicle but were unsuccessful. Deputies attempted to "ping" the cellphone of the vehicle's registered owner, but the cell phone was located in the vehicle.
Temperatures dropped into the single digits during Monday night and early Tuesday morning.
On Tuesday, A missing persons report was filed for Kessel around 9:36 a.m. Deputies and numerous volunteers searched the area in hopes of finding Kessel. An Iowa State Patrol airplane was also utilized in the search.
Kessel's body was discovered around 5:10 p.m. in an area approximately an eighth of a mile north of 231st St. and half a mile east of Independence Ave.
The investigation into what caused the crash is ongoing, and any tips related to the incident should be reported to the Muscatine County Sheriff's Office at (563)264-0188.
