Alternating Currents film festival wraps up at The Last Picture House

The Alternating Currents film festival came to a close on Sunday in downtown Davenport.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Alternating Currents film festival had previously been held at the Figge Art Museum, but this year was the first year it was held at an even more event-appropriate location- The Last Picture House in downtown Davenport.

And this year it drew quite the crowd. Film festival programmer Michael Mehuys says he's been involved for seven years, and this year had some theaters in a standing-room-only situation, bringing in around 300 people all weekend.

He says that he hopes the event brought together some of the filmmakers who had their films featured on the screens- but also anyone interested in making films that haven't started yet because "filmmaking is not an island, you can't do it by yourself."

News 8 caught up with local filmmaker Brandon Gale, who says he and his team put together his film in just two weeks. He says he saw the submission date and sprung into action calling the project a "pretty fly by the seat of your pants kind of thing."

Regardless of the time crunch, his film, "Meet Me at the End of it All" made it to Davenport's silver screen. It's a movie about a couple who confess their feelings for each other as the world is ending- and the entire thing was shot in downtown Davenport. Gale says that sometimes we don't even realize how great the locations are that we have right in front of us.

The movie was shot in Davenport and edited where he lives in Rock Island, a true Quad Cities production.

Brandon says that it can be easy to be overwhelmed by big budgets and expensive equipment, but sometimes all you need is creativity "and a little bit of bravery.”
