More layoffs coming to Perry, Iowa | PSSI losing 76 workers

Packers Sanitation Services Incorporated layoffs will be effective on June 28, the same day as Perry's Tyson Foods facility.

PERRY, Iowa — The Perry, Iowa community is losing more jobs.

Packers Sanitation Services Incorporated will lay off 76 employees by the end of June, according to a notification on Iowa's Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification Act (WARN) website.

The 76 impacted employees were notified of the layoffs on Wednesday, March 27. The layoffs will be effective on Friday, June 28, the same day as Perry's Tyson Foods pork facility, which announced its closure in early March.

PSSI is located at the same address as Tyson, 13500 I Court, according to WARN.

With the WARN notification in mind, layoffs related to Tyson now total 1,352.

The small Iowa city of 8,000 people has been frequented by workforce groups and mobile job centers in recent weeks, as the now-growing number of layoffs looms ahead.

Perry officials told Local 5 they were concerned about the Tyson closure impacting related jobs and industries, with Mayor Dirk Cavanaugh emphasizing just how many people rely on Perry's largest employer.

“If spouses of people that work at Tyson leave and take their spouse with them, that’s another job somewhere," he said.

Local 5 has reached out to PSSI for more information on the layoffs but has yet to hear back.
