SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane’s beer scene is growing. There are currently more than 60 breweries across the area, including No-Li Brewhouse.
“I think craft beer is a big part of the definition of what the city's becoming,” John Bryant, owner of No-Li said.
No-Li now has worldwide recognition and is helping to put Spokane on the map when it comes to craft beer.
“From the start, what we wanted to do was foster a community of more craft brewers that had the ability to grow,” Bryant said.
And growing the craft beer industry in Spokane is just what No-Li owner John Bryant is doing. He is teaming up with Eastern Washington University to crate a new craft beer certificate program.
Bryant, whose parents both attended Eastern, gave $10,000 to the university to help get the program started this fall.
The Craft Beer Industry Professional Certificate program will cover brewing, front house operations, diversity and inclusion in the beer industry, and more. The course includes 15 credits all related to the beer industry.
Anyone with a previous degree from an accredited university can sign up for the program. The first classes start up this fall and the program is already almost full.
“We've had a couple that contacted us about the program that went to Eastern in the 80s and they're looking to come back,” EWU Professor Chris Cindric said.
Students will be learning in actual breweries, like No-Li, with the hope that graduates of the program will be ready for jobs in the brewing industry.
“There are hundreds of jobs that are connected to the craft beer industry,” Cindric said.
While the hope is to grow Spokane’s footprint on the beer scene, Bryant said graduates of the program should be able to get a job anywhere.
“When students come out of school after this program, they'll have brewed at No-Li, they'll have done internships, they could literally interview to get a job here or anywhere in America,” Bryant said.
