CLEVELAND — If your summer travel includes flight plans, prepare for a few more furry plane companions.
Since 2018, the number of us bringing pets along is steadily rising, according to the American Pet Products Association, which follows industry trends. The percentage of pet owners taking dogs on planes nearly doubled over a six-year period. Cats, however, nearly tripled.
But you have to know what commercial airlines do and don't allow since pet policies vary widely within the industry. As a general rule of thumb, pets have to fit in carriers beneath the seat in front of the passenger and weigh about 20 pounds or less. Bigger breeds fly cargo. Each airline has different requirements and fees, so it's up to the traveler to check ahead. Different regulations apply for service animals.

K9 Jets is a pay-per-seat private jet charter for pets, with the belief that "when you fly, you should not leave a key family member in cargo."
K9 Jets offers flights for pets and owners from New Jersey, London, Lisbon, Paris, Dubai and more. Dogs and cats are equally welcome. As with BarkAir, passage on K9 Jets comes with a steep price. Airfare from New Jersey to London is about $9,000 one-way per seat.

Pet experts always say it's safest to leave your pets at home, but if you must travel with them (and chartered pet planes aren't an option) it's good to do your homework.
NerdWallet recently released its Most Pet-Friendly Airlines of 2024. It looked at nine different U.S. airlines and considered such factors as average pet fee, restrictions and safety records. Alaska Airlines received the highest rating.
It begs repeating, if you are going to travel with your pet to make sure you understand clearly the requirements, restrictions and the fees before you head to the airport.
