DES MOINES, Iowa — The Animal Rescue League of Iowa (ARL) is warning pet owners not to fall victim to a recent scam.
The nonprofit animal shelter has received reports of a scammer pretending to be an ARL representative.
The scammers contact the owners of lost pets to falsely claim their pet was found and needed urgent medical care. Then, the scammers request money for medical expenses so the pet owner can reclaim their animal.
The ARL said it will never ask for payment without giving pet owners the opportunity to visit the facility and see their pet.
The organization urged pet owners to always verify the identity of a caller. In addition, the ARL reminded Iowans that all lost pets that arrive at their facilities are posted on two websites: Petco Love Lost and Iowa Pet Alert.
Anyone who has been targeted by a pet-related scam is asked to contact the ARL or their local law enforcement agency.
