MOLINE, Ill. — With the holiday season just around the corner, it's the perfect time to try a new gingerbread recipe! Hot water gingerbread is perfect for parties and family gatherings.
The recipe for Hot Water Gingerbread has been around since the 1840's.
Ingredients needed:
- 2.5 cups flour
- 2 tsp. soda
- 1/2 tsp. baking powder
- 2 tsp. cinnamon
- 2 tsp. ginger
- 1/2 tsp. cloves
- 1/2 tsp. nutmeg
- 2 eggs
- 3/4 cup molasses (dark)
- 3/4 cup browns sugar (dark)
- 3/4 cup cooking oil
- 1 cup hot water
All you do:
- Sift the dry ingredients twice
- Beat the eggs
- Add the sugar, oil and molasses to the eggs and beat till smooth. (Hint: Measure the oil first and then measure the molasses in the same cup so the molasses will come out easily.)
- Quickly stir in the hot water and add this mixture to the dry ingredients
- Beat till smooth
- Pour into a greased pan 9 or 10 inches square
- Bake for 30 minutes at 375 degrees
- Serve warm with whipped cream
