DUBUQUE COUNTY, Iowa — Multiple black bears have been seen wandering across eastern Iowa this summer, according to the Iowa Department of Natural Resources (DNR).
The department is currently aware of four bears in eastern Iowa, but anticipates there may be two more in the area. So far, Iowans have reported bear sightings in Dubuque County and Cedar County.
Black bear sightings aren't uncommon in Iowa. The DNR reports black bears are native to the state and sometimes visit from neighboring states as well.
Amid the recent sightings, the Iowa DNR urged Iowans to give the bears space and avoid attracting bears to your yard.
"These guys are curious and smart, but you can be smarter," Iowa DNR said on Facebook.
Here are some ways to stay "Bear Wise" as black bears continue to wander the Hawkeye State:
- Don't go looking for bears.
- Car and foot traffic build up can affect bear movement and safety.
- Traffic can also cause both health and other safety issues.
- Put all food items away, including pet food.
- Store grills and smokers inside. Make sure to cover them and remove drip trays.
- Avoid feeding birds if you know bears are in your area.
- Pick up fallen fruit from any of your trees.
