Habitat for Humanity welcomes family into new home

The non-profit celebrates the completion of their their sixth street location with a welcome home ceremony

DAVENPORT, Iowa — "This is the day we see all of our fruits of labor come together", a Habitat for Humanity employee described the celebration of their 118th home.

The non-profit welcomed a family into their new home during a traditional dedication ceremony.

New home owner, Demessi Djibom, and her two daughters Ruth and Faith waited two years to call this place home.

"It took me two years, and then it took 11 months to build the house," Djibom said.

It's all part of Habitat for Humanity's affordable housing project.

The three bedroom one bathroom property located in Davenport is one of three housing projects at the sixth street location. The other two homes are currently under construction.

The property also includes a walk out basement.

Djibom said owning a home is a dream come true for her family -- and helped with the completion of her new house. She shoveled during the winter, chose her paint colors, and took courses provided by Habitat for Humanity to help prepare herself for home ownership.

"I encourage everyone to apply for it. it does take some time but you get some ease. Just be patient," Djibom said.

Habitat for Humanity ended the ceremony by handing Djibom and her family a symbolic key to represent the new chapter.
