ELDRIDGE, Iowa — The City of Eldridge, Iowa approved a resolution ordering the removal of their city clerk Tuesday night during a special city council meeting.
Former City Clerk Denise Benson worked for the city for thirty years before she was placed on paid leave in mid-October after the council said they discovered she had allegedly misused city funds.
"Benson's personal use of a City credit card on multiple occasions despite her signed acknowledgment that using a City credit card for personal use will be grounds for immediate termination," Eldridge Mayor Frank King said.
The special meeting lasted just over two minutes. The resolution to fire Benson was the only item on the meeting agenda.
Now, Benson is being investigated by the Iowa State Auditor. That process is expected to begin in the coming weeks.
Mayor King stated he had no idea how much money Benson misused, due to her time working for the city. He also said that he is unaware of how many years of Benson's transactions will be investigated. That decision will ultimately be left up to the state auditor.
Benson was not present during the special city council meeting. News 8 reached out to her on multiple occasions but did not receive a comment.
As of now, Mayor Frank said the city has not pressed any criminal charges against Benson.
