Quad Cities Go Red for Women hosts its 20th anniversary luncheon

The American Heart Association fundraiser included News 8's James Zahara as one of its "Heart Throbs."

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Quad Cities Go Red for Women, a movement by the American Heart Association, hosted its 20th anniversary luncheon on Friday, Oct. 27.

The luncheon, lasting from noon to 1 p.m. at the DoubleTree by Hilton in Davenport, is one of the association's biggest fundraising events of the year.

The Go Red for Women movement works to raise awareness about the dangers of heart disease and stroke. Heart disease is the number one killer of women in the U.S., affecting more than 60 million women, according to the U.S. Department of Health and Human Service's Office of Women's Health

“As we celebrate two decades of Go Red for Women in the Quad Cities, we highlight the progress we’ve made and rally to continue raising awareness of women’s greatest health threat,” Dounia Sareini, Quad Cities Go Red for Women co-chair, said. “Awareness is key for women to recognize warning signs and get the treatment they need.”

At the color-coordinated luncheon, keynote speaker Dr. Amit Bahia discussed the progress of cardiovascular medicine. Local heart transplant survivor Susan Haack, who was diagnosed with congestive heart failure at 44 years old, also shared her journey. A silent auction was also present throughout the event.

Also at the event were the "Heart Throbs," local male celebrities who support the Go Red for Women cause. News 8's chief meteorologist James Zahara attended alongside other news personalities and city staff.
