ROCK ISLAND, Ill. — Rock Island's public pool, Whitewater Junction, is opening May 25 — now with new after-hours events.
Community recreation and facilities manager Nikki Carr said a full staff gives the pool more flexibility with the events it offers.
"We're just able to offer more when we aren't concerned about having enough staff," Carr said. "Safety's our main priority, so we never want to run a busy day with not enough staff."
Others in the Quad Cities, like Davenport's Annie Wittenmyer Aquatic Center and Fejervary Pool, have faced lifeguard shortages in the past. This year, Davenport also has enough staff to operate its pools at full capacity.
Along with standard services like swim lessons and early-morning lap swims, Whitewater Junction will offer more special events. Each requires a $10 pre-registration fee. You can register in advance on the city's website.
Here's what you can look forward to this summer:
Adult Swim Night
Volleyball, slides, drinks and a DJ — all for adults 21 and older. You can register ahead of time for $10, or pay $20 at the door.
Events are on Fridays — June 7, June 21, July 19 and August 9 from 6:15 p.m. to 9:15 p.m.
Mermaids and Pirates Party
Mermaids, mermen and scallywags of all ages are welcome to meet a mermaid, make crafts and play games. Slides and water features will be open for play. Ages 2 and under get in for free, but everyone else is required to register in advance.
Events are on Fridays — June 14 and July 12 from 6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m., and August 16 from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m.
Frozen Party
Meet Olaf and Elsa at this winter-themed party. All ages can make crafts, play games, and get in the water. Ages 2 and under get in for free, but everyone else is required to register in advance.
Events are on Fridays — June 28 and July 26 from 6:15 p.m. to 8:15 p.m.
