Explore the Mississippi River with River Action's Summer Education Program

Registration for the 2024 Explore the River Series is now open to learn first-hand from experts about the Mississippi River.

DAVENPORT, Iowa — Explore the River Series is part of River Action's Summer Education Program, where participants get to learn firsthand from experts about the wildlife, history, culture, and geography along the Mississippi River.

Registration for the Channel Cat talk and guided tours are available for Quad City residents and visitors. Below are a few of the 52 sessions River Action is offering in 2024. 

Channel Cat Talks

Participants can board the water taxi from the Riverbend Commons in Moline and listen to experts narrate on this hour-and-a-half cruise along the river with limited space.

Channel Cat talks costs $20. The taxi leaves from the dock at 2951 River Drive in Moline. 

You can hear from:

  • Guinness World Record Holder, Dana Starkell, on June 25th & 27th.
  • Geotechnical Engineer, Matt Dotson, on July 23rd & 35th. 
  • Musician and Jazz Historian, Josh Duffee, on July 30th & August 1st. 

Riverine Walks

Guided walking tours meet at different sites around the QC area, each location can be found in Explore the River Brochures or online at River Action Summer Education.

This year you can walk as you listen to: 

  • "Past, present, and Future of Moline Centre's Riverfront" with Kirk Marske of Renew Moline on May 29th and June 1st. 
  • "Ballpark Backstage Pass" with River Bandits owner Dave Heller to tour Modern Woodmen Park on June 5th & 8th.
  • "This is a farm" with Tapestry Farms' Hydroponics Manager, Sonja Kinser to tour a self-contained hydroponic freight-farm 

Riverine Walks are $10 or free with a River Action Membership, which can be purchased here
