ROCK ISLAND, Illinois -- A search has been suspended after crews spent hours looking for someone who may have fallen in the Mississippi River.
Emergency crews started their search near Schwiebert Park Monday evening, July 29, after getting a report that a child may have fallen in. A witness at the park told WQAD that they say a roughly 12-year-old boy playing near the water, but never saw him come back up.
On Tuesday morning, Rock Island Fire Marshal Greg Marty said that the search efforts have been suspended.
"We had one unverified witness," said Marty. He also said there was no parent of a missing child at the park or any reports of missing persons.
Emergency crews used radar to see whether someone may be in the water, but didn't find anyone.
The timeline of events on the day is below.
9:25 p.m.: A diver was brought in to double-check the water.
9:01 p.m: Emergency crews put up crime scene tape around the area and large spotlights.
8:29 p.m: The Rock Island Fire Department says they’re not sure if anyone has fallen in and are interviewing a witness by the water.
