MILAN, Illinois -- A crash that stopped traffic for almost an hour on Interstate 280 happened when an SUV was trying to avoid a crash with a semi that crossed over into wrong-way traffic.

Around 6:15 p.m. on Wednesday, July 17, the driver of an SUV was headed eastbound on I-280 when a semi from the other direction of traffic crossed over the median and into her direction of travel, according to the Illinois State Police.  In an attempt to avoid hitting the semi, the driver turned left, and wound up hitting another semi that was in the lane next to her.

Police said the semi that crossed over into the wrong direction of traffic hit a guardrail, rolled onto its side, and came to rest in a ditch.  This happened near Mile Marker 14.

At around 7 p.m. one lane of traffic was reopened for drivers.  Police said emergency crews were on scene until 1:15 a.m. Thursday.

Police said 62-year-old Gail Hatcher, who was driving the semi that crossed into the westbound lanes, was cited for failure to reduce speed to avoid a crash and possession of alcohol in a commercial motor vehicle.  Minor injuries were reported.
