Fulton County Sheriff’s deputy killed in the line of duty in Avon, Illinois

Several police are on scene where an officer was reportedly shot in Fulton County, Illinois.

AVON, Illinois -- An Avon man is accused of shooting and killing a Fulton County, Illinois, sheriff’s deputy who was responding to a battery and disturbance call in Avon, Illinois.

Deputy Troy Chisum, 39, responded to the call and was fatally shot near North Troy Road and East Troy Road, at around 2 p.m. on Tuesday, June 25, said Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard.

Nathan Woodring, 42, was detained in a rural home about 30 miles south of Galesburg, Illinois at 8:20 a.m. this morning, Wednesday, June 26. Woodring had barricaded himself in the home at 5:10 p.m. last night, according to Fulton County Sheriff Jeff Standard. By 10 p.m. the incident was contained with no apparent danger to the public.

Chisum was a four-year veteran of the sheriff's office, a paramedic with the Fulton County Emergency Management Agency, a member of the West Central Special Response Team and the Illinois Law Enforcement Alarm System- Weapons of Mass Destruction Special Response Team. 

“I stand before you today saddened and at a loss of adequate words to express the grief we are feeling over the loss of one of our own," Standard said at a press conference on Wednesday. "On behalf of the Fulton County Sheriff’s Office, I would like to extend our deepest condolences to the family and friends of Deputy Chisum.

"Deputy Chisum dedicated his life to the service of his community. His legacy and sacrifice will forever be remembered.”

Further details surrounding the shooting are currently under investigation. There were no other reported injuries.
