ROCK ISLAND, Illinois -- Three kayakers were rescued from a log jam near Sunset Marina.
Around 4:30 p.m. on Sunday, June 2 someone called 911 to report a kayaker in trouble, according to Doug DuBree, Chief of the Blackhawk Fire Protection District. Multiple agencies responded, looking along Vandruff Island, Big Island and the Hennepin Canal in Rock Island.
Bystanders had reported bearing calls for help from a treeline in the area, said DuBree.
Rescuers wound up spotting them in the water off of 8th Street and 41st Avenue and were able to speak with them. An Illinois DNR Conservation Police Officer was able to reach the three kayakers by launching a boat from Big Island Road.
"He was able to get to the subjects and rescue the three of them from a log jam down behind and upstream of Ted's Boatarama on 31st Avenue in Rock Island," read DuBree's statement.
The kayakers refused any medical treatment.
Crews were on scene for about two hours.
The Blackhawk Fire Department said they were urging people to stay out of rivers "due to the swift current and amount of debris in the river." People were also advised to stay away from the Steel and Sears dams on the Rock River.
