EAST MOLINE, Illinois -- One man has been arrested and another remains on the loose after running away when police stopped to assist them.

East Moline

Officers were called to the area of 30th Avenue and 7th Street around 12:15 p.m. Wednesday, May 1 where a vehicle was stopped in a construction zone, according to a spokesperson from the East Moline Police Department.

Police say they stopped and approached the occupants of the vehicle to provide assistance.

The driver told the officer that the vehicle had run out of gas.

Other officers responded to help provide traffic control in the construction zone and surrounding area that had begun to back up.

Officers found the passenger walking northbound who said they ran out of gas and he was walking to the gas station. Police say they tried to help the passenger get to the gas station but he dropped a bag of drugs and took off running.

Officers pursued the man on foot but he escaped.

"Meanwhile, the driver of the vehicle was found to be driving on a suspended license and also fled on foot. Due to the proximity to of the area to Glenview Middle School and Ridgewood Elementary, the schools went on a soft exterior lockdown as a normal security precaution."

The exterior lockdown lasted around an hour and a half and police say no students were ever in any danger. Officers searched the residential area and found both men hiding and arrested them.

Officers searched for about an hour with a K9 unit, looking through yards and around the street.

Both Watson and Shivers are being held in the Rock Island County Jail.
