DAVENPORT, Iowa -- A suspect is charged with attempted murder after shooting a Davenport police officer in the chest and the leg.
The shooting happened in a yard in the 1600 block of West 17th Street around 4:24 p.m. on Thursday, April 25, according to a statement from the Scott County Sheriff Tim Lane.
According to Sheriff Lane, the incident started when a pair of officers were trying to detain two men for suspicious activity in the area. Neither of the men were cooperating with the officers.
One man, 27-year-old Nathaniel O. Viering, was arrested at that location, said Sheriff Lane. The other man, 27-year-old Brett S. Dennis Sr. took off on foot and led an officer on a chase.
During that pursuit, Dennis took out a 9mm handgun and shot Officer Ryan Leabo. Officer Leabo fired back, hitting Dennis in the leg; the suspect was treated for his gunshot wound and was then booked into the Scott County Jail.
As for the officer, Davenport Police Chief Paul Sikorski said he is "recovering and doing well."
Officer Leabo has since been released from the hospital.
Online jail records show that Viering was taken to the Scott County Jail. He's facing drug-related charges as well as interference with official acts and second-degree theft. According to Sheriff Lane, Viering was on pre-trial release for second-degree theft at the time of the incident.
Dennis was charged with attempt to commit murder and felon in possession of a firearm from Thursday's shooting, show online jail records. He was also wanted on existing warrants for harassment, contempt of court, criminal mischief, driving while barred, eluding and no registration.
The neighborhood that the shooting happened in had been under surveillance by a QC NETS unit, which stands for Neighborhoods Energized to Succeed.
