DAVENPORT, Iowa -- A 19-year-old man has been accused of trying to set a fire inside the JB Young Opportunity Center.
Richard D. Gatewood has been charged with reckless use of fire or explosives after the arson incident on Thursday, February 28, according to an affidavit. It happened around 11:10 a.m., and people were inside at the time.
The affidavit said Gatewood lit a bag on fire inside the facility, located at 1702 Main Street in Davenport. The fire filled the hallway with smoke. The building houses Davenport School District offices.
Investigators looked at surveillance video and wound up finding Gatewood at a Kwik Shop on West Locust Street.
In addition to the charge of reckless use of fire, Gatewood was charged with trespassing, harassment and theft.
