Firearm found inside vehicle parked at Central High School

A vehicle parked in the lot at Central High School was found with a gun inside.

DAVENPORT, Iowa -- A vehicle parked in the lot at Central High School was found with a gun inside.

The vehicle was found before school on Thursday, February 14, according to Dawn Saul with Davenport Schools.  She added that the vehicle did not have a parking tag and was found in the south teacher lot.

School security immediately notified police, Saul said, and officers were there within minutes.  Police were called to the school at about 8:10 a.m.

According to the Davenport Police Department, school staff opened the vehicle while searching for a parking permit and found a gun inside the glovebox, which was closed.

Police said the gun was not in plain view.

"The investigation determined that the owner of the firearm had a valid permit and legally possessed the firearm," said police. They went on to say that it was "determined that at no time did the firearm pose a threat to anyone."

The owner of the firearm had a valid permit and had the gun under legal circumstances, according to police.

"As the car was under constant supervision and no person approached, it was determined that there was no immediate threat to the building," sad Saul.

Police said no charges were being filed.

"To me this is a good example of, "if you see something, say something,"" she said.
