MOLINE, Illinois- Rescue crews attempted a rescue in the Rock River for several hours before they realized the man the were searching for was already safe and sound.
February 7, around 3:00 p.m. the man was seen walking waist deep into the water by police before his head went under the water.
Moline fire, police and river rescue crews rushed to the scene in their cold weather gear.
They searched two specific areas along the upper Rock River amidst mild flooding for several hours in shifts.
Battling the frigid temperatures and high winds that made the rescue that much more difficult.
As of 4:00 p.m. February 7, officials said they were still treating it as a rescue operation, not a body recovery.
But there was a twist in this story.
According to the Moline Fire Department, the man is a certified diving instructor.
He had a certificate to dive as well as the proper equipment.
In addition, the man actually saw himself on the news! He called the police and explained the huge misunderstanding.
The search was then called off with a happy ending.
