Illinois man breaks into business wielding machete, prompts stand-off

MCNABB, Illinois -- The Putnam County Sheriff has declared residents are safe after a stand-off caused responders to block off several roads in McNabb.

Billy J. Marcano, 31, of McNabb, was arrested yesterday according to a press release from the sheriff's office.

The situation started when a business owner called 911, saying a man with a machete broke through a locked door and entered the building, according the the press release

At least nine emergency departments responded, providing backup and shutting down the entrances to the village, the press release states. Businesses in the area were asked to lock down and remain inside until the situation was cleared.

Marcano exited his apartment and surrendered at 9 p.m.

He's being held on a burglary charge. More charges could follow.

Police  blocked off traffic into the Putnam County village of McNabb during the day February 5.
